Well, after years of preaching to everyone about the importance of backing up your data, it finally happened. I lost my hard drive, and never saw it coming. It didn’t even start making noise or giving any errors. Just like that, it overheated and died. I wouldn’t have even know it was a thermal event until I tried to scan the drive for errors. It spins up and just reboots on it’s on. When I unplug the drive, the computer will stay up in bios.
Here is where my warnings of doom and gloom about losing your data paid off. I was using Carbonite and all of my data was constantly being backed up while I used my computer. Now I make a living off of repairing computers, and I can do some data recovery, but we don’t have a clean room to do the hardcore stuff. I always feel bad for customers who have lost their files, pictures and music. I also remind them on the importance of doing backups in case this happens again, but they really don’t listen.
The truth is that it’s worth the annual fee for Carbonite and it will pay for itself. Just make sure you have it turned on and up to date. I promise you will not be sorry. I still have 12 gigs of data that would have been gone!
So with that said. Install Carbonite, keep your anti-virus current and always run Microsoft backups, and you will be safer than 90% of computer users who don’t.
